We have a number of things to do in class today:

  • We're going to review a few points about creating an integrated lesson plan/unit. This discussion will help you with Phase 4 of your Social Studies unit that is due on Monday, April 30th.
  • We're going to look at two different technology tools - one that can be used to enhance your teaching and the other one that is an organizational tool for you.
  • We will also complete the online course evaluations for EDU 350 and EDU 360.
  • And, finally, we will go to TJES to support Memoree as she teaches her lesson about mealworms!

Thursday, April 12, 2012

We're going to visit briefly about science learning centers first....then we will move to the computer lab and investigate the technology resources I provided you with this past Tuesday.

The links are as follows:

After previewing these sites, we will break to go to the third grade classroom at TJES for Billi's lesson demonstration.

Assignment for Tuesday, April 17:

  • Phase 4 of the Social Studies unit is due.
  • Take home quizzes for Chapters 13 and 14 are due.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

In class today we will discuss Chapter 7 from your text and your Science Lesson Assignment progress. We will then transition over to the third grade classroom at TJES to participate in Shyanne's lesson demonstration about liquids and solids.

Graphic Organizers
Migratory Bird C enter (Smithsonian)

Assignment for Tuesday, April 10 (my son's 28th birthday!):

You will have two take-home quizzes to complete and turn in at the beginning of class on Tuesday, April 10th. This is for Chapters 10 and 11.

Enjoy your Easter break!

Thursday, March 22, 2012

We're going to be swinging our focus to science now, after this week. Today in class we discussed the Science Lesson Assignment that is due next week Thursday, March 29. Remember to have sections a, b and c completed and ready to turn in at 1 PM on March 29th.

I'm going to be using this blog more than EDU 350 after this week.....stay tuned!

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Today for class we're going to go to the third grade at TJES. I'm going to lead a lesson titled "Healthy Heart". The children are going to use stethoscopes to document their resting heart rate and their heart rate after movement. We will do an activity with pedometers. The children will get to take the pedometers home with them.

Next week, we will use the time on Thursday afternoon that is scheduled for Science Methods to do our Social Studies assignment.

Both courses (and the texts) focus on teaching strategies that can be used with ALL curricular areas. So we will cover the content of both courses but demonstrate it through Social Studies.

More discussion on this in class.....no assignment for this class for next week.

Thursday, February 16, 2012

We're going to begin with a discussion about the unit topics we've been working on developing. We will then move to an overview of FOSS, an inquiry based science curriculum:

FOSSweb

Somehow we'll transition into Chapter 5, particularly page 91 with the science kit check-list. Following this discussion, we'll look at some of the science kits along with a Powerpoint presentation on the 5E's.

Assignment for Thursday, Feb. 23:

Read Chapter 6 in the text. Complete numbers 3 and 5 on page 113. These will be due at the beginning of class on the 23.

Thursday, February 9, 2012

As you know, we learned about automatic response systems (ARS), or "clickers" as they're commonly referred to, in class today. This experience tied directly into this course as it is "integrated science and technology" so clickers are relevant to both topics.

Your assignments for today will be collected.

Side note: The content for both of these methods courses (EDU 350 and EDU 360) have many similarities. For example, we've been discussing teaching strategies in EDU 350 and Chapter 5 in EDU 360 is on the same thing!

Assignment for Thursday, Feb. 16:

Using the list of science unit topics you generated for this week (and the grade level you included), align the topics with the ND State Science Standards for the grade level you chose. The best way to do this is to make a two- column table. In one column of the table, going down, list your unit topics. In the second table, also going down, align the state standards with each one of the topics. This will be due at the beginning of class on Feb. 16.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Today in class, we'll begin with our quiz over Chapters 2 & 3.

We are going to be demonstrating the 5 E Instructional Model (the progression of inquiry) in class today using a number of static electricity experiments. When we're done with the experiments, we'll relate the process to the 5 E's of this instructional model. This model will be used in all of your future science lessons.

Assignment for Thursday, Feb. 9th:
  • Read Chapter 4 in your text.
  • Complete #3 on page 74. Use the information in the chapter about classroom organization. Make sure the space you create allows for appropriate work spaces in which students can engage in science work.
  • Create a list of topics for a 9 month academic year, September through May. Include the following information:
    • Include 12-14 science unit topics.
    • Identify the grade level.
    • Keep in mind the relevant topics, or standards, on page 60 of your text.
    • Maintain a balance of topics between physical, life, space, earth science, etc.
    • You only need to list the topic of the unit for this assignment. You do not need to include any lesson ideas or suggestions or objectives (as described in the chapter).
    • This list must be typed (word processed) and is due at the beginning of class on Feb. 9th.

ND Science Teachers Spring Conference

The ND Science Teachers Conference “. . . Building a Sustainable Global Community” is being held
Feb. 24-25 at the Bismarck Career Academy on the BSC campus.

As a requirement for this course, I would like you to attend around your class schedule. These types of opportunities are not only educational, and look good on your CV, but it also gives you a chance to network.

Thursday, January 19, 2012

We're going to discuss Chapter 1 in your text today in class.

As you probably know, we will not have this class next week because of Professional Development Days (Wednesday and Thursday). Because we will be missing class, your assignment for the following week will include the following:

Assignment for Thursday, February 2:

Read Chapters 2 & 3 (you were already assigned Chapter 2). Complete the two multiple choice exercises for these two chapters. You will hand those in at the beginning of class. Then, in class on Feb. 2, we will begin with a quiz over the material in these two hand-outs.
